Paulist Press
announces the establishment of the
Rev. Lawrence E. Boadt, CSP
Memorial Fund
to further publishing in the field of biblical scholarship and professional resources.
Rev. Lawrence E. Boadt, CSP, a prominent biblical scholar and author, as well as publisher of Paulist Press for many years, went home to the heavenly Father on July 24, 2010.
He became editor of Paulist Press in 1975, vice president in 1997, and publisher and president in 1998.
Fr. Boadt taught biblical studies at several institutions including Fordham University, Bronx, NY (1974-1976); St. John's University, Jamaica, NY (1975-1976); and the Washington Theological Union, Washington, DC (1976-1997). He served as president and treasurer of the Catholic Biblical Association of America and was active in both Catholic and Protestant biblical organizations.
Fr. Boadt taught numerous Scripture courses and Bible classes and offered frequent workshops for laity, professionals, and clergy. He led many tours of the Holy Land and through Turkey and Greece, following in the steps of St. Paul. He was the author of many books and scholarly articles, including his widely used book Reading the Old Testament: An Introduction that has sold over 290,000 copies since its publication in December, 1984.
Fr. Boadt was an extraordinary biblical scholar whose unique gift was contributing to the body of knowledge on Scripture, but he was also brilliant in being able to open the Scriptures to others–both of these his passion, his lifelong work, and his lasting legacy. Fr. Boadt was inspired to live the words of the Second Vatican Council's Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum; and he worked faithfully and zealously in doing so.
As a most fitting way of memorializing him, Paulist Press invites you to contribute to the newly established Rev. Lawrence E. Boadt, CSP, Memorial Fund, which will help continue Fr. Boadt's life's work by promoting works of biblical scholarship. The first project planned is a revision of his landmark work, Reading the Old Testament, which he was unable to finish before he died.
