Paulist Press publishes ecumenical theology, Roman Catholic studies and books on scripture, liturgy, spirituality, church history, and philosophy as well as works on faith and culture. Our publishing is oriented toward adult-level nonfiction, although we offer a growing selection of children's stories and activity books. We do not publish poetry.
Before forwarding a manuscript to us, we prefer that you submit a one to two page summary that:
- details the focus of the manuscript and the rationale for writing it;
- gives a short description of the content;
- pinpoints the audience to be reached; and
- projects the length of the completed manuscript
All submissions must be typed double-spaced, with generous margins on all sides. In the case of children's book submissions please see
"Author Guidelines for Submitting Children's Books" below.
Should you send a complete adult or children's manuscript, please note that photocopied manuscripts are acceptable although multiple and/or simultaneous submissions are not favored. We ask that no computer diskettes be sent unless requested. In the case of a full manuscript submission, please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you wish the manuscript returned. Paulist Press is not responsible for the return of unsolicited manuscripts. Upon publication, Paulist Press pays its authors royalties or fees, depending on the size and variety of the manuscript. All royalties and fees are negotiable. Reporting time is generally six to eight weeks.

Author Guidelines for Submitting Children's Books
Paulist Press is a Catholic publishing house that prints approximately twelve children's titles a year. The goal of our company is to publish quality books on Christian and Catholic themes. All book ideas should be religious in nature, written for the Christian and/or Catholic market.
We do accept unsolicited manuscripts; however most of our titles have been commissioned. We try to work with authors we know
If you'd like to submit your children's manuscript, please note the
following guidelines:
- Include a cover letter with your manuscript that summarizes your story and describes which category (listed below) and age group you have in mind.
- Include a resume of your education, work experience, and published works.
- Your manuscript should be typed, double-spaced, on an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of white paper. Always send us a copy of your work (keep your original).
- Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with your manuscript if you would like us to return it to you.
Children's books published by Paulist Press fall into one of the following
categories. Please keep these categories in mind when you submit ideas.
- Preschool Picture Books (Ages 2 - 5), introducing Christian and Catholic themes to the very young. These books hold a few words on each page. The illustrations are just as or more important than the text. Be sure to include suggestions for illustrations. However, Paulist Press reserves the right for final decisions on all illustrations.
- Books of Blessings and Prayer Books (Ages 5 - 8). These books include family blessings and traditional Catholic prayers.
- Chapter Books (Ages 8 - 12). Paulist Press is looking for more titles like those in "The Emerald Bible Collection," imaginative fiction or non-fiction chapter books for the middle reader on Christian themes.
- Young Adult Biographies (Ages 9 - 14). We are always looking for biographies on the saints and modern heroes. Please refer to our two titles, Mother Teresa and Maximilian Kolbe.
- Catholic Guidebooks (Ages 5+). These books explain some component of our Catholic tradition to the young. Refer to our title A Walk through Our Church.
- Gift Books (All ages). These titles are hardcover books for the family on classic topics such as the saints, favorite Bible stories, holy days, and more.
