Sunday Homilies
Liturgical Year A

Father Bergen's Sunday Homilies is a three-volume collection of reflections on the Sunday Scripture readings for each week of the Liturgical Year—Years A, B, and C.

Drawn from more than forty years of preaching at St. Ignatius Church in Baltimore and St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York City, Sunday Homilies: Liturgical Year A gathers the wisdom, warmth, and pastoral insight of Fr. William Bergen, SJ. Each homily offers a clear, prayerful reflection on the Sunday readings from the Church's Lectionary—organized by the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time—and invites readers to enter more deeply into the rhythm of the liturgical year. Year A follows the Gospel of Matthew, with selections from John during the Easter season, offering a distinctive perspective on the life and teachings of Jesus. Whether used for personal meditation, group study, or as inspiration for preaching, this volume offers spiritual nourishment rooted in Scripture and grounded in lived faith.

William Bergen, SJ, is a native of New York City and has been a Jesuit priest for the past sixty years. He has spent most of that time in parish ministry—first at Saint Ignatius Parish in Baltimore and then for the past thirty-five years at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish in New York City. Fr. Bergen had been on the staff of Mount Manresa Retreat House in Staten Island prior to its closing and an adjunct professor of theology at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, NJ. Since his retirement at the end of 2024, he has continued to pursue his interest in sacred scripture and Christian spirituality.
