Dear Friends, Welcome! Paulist Press, as a mission of the Paulist Fathers, shares the joy of the gospel at the intersection of faith and culture. In 1865, the founder of the Paulist Fathers, Servant of God Isaac Thomas Hecker, established the Press as an essential apostolate of their mission, saying, “My best conviction is that the spread and defense of the holy faith by means of the Press in every form and shape is an integral part of its Paulist vocation.” This mission and vision of the Press articulates the ongoing reception of the Second Vatican Council by listening to the signs of the times and being in dialogue with all people of goodwill. It is an honor and a privilege to be selected and appointed by the Paulist Fathers as the first lay president and publisher of the Press. I am aware that this appointment follows an amazing 160-year history of Paulist Fathers who have guided this vision of their founder in sharing the gospel of Jesus and the rich traditions of American Catholicism. It is with a sense of pride that I build on the mantle of the Press’s most recent Publishers: Frs. Kevin Lynch, Lawrence Boadt, and Mark-David Janus, who have each embraced the teachings of the Second Vatican Council by publishing content that resonates with this intersection of faith and contemporary culture. In appointing a lay president and publisher, the Paulist Fathers demonstrate their strong commitment to lay involvement in their mission and ministry as reflected in the Council and the guidance and teaching of Pope Francis. With that goal in mind, we invite you to join us on this pilgrimage of hope and faith and explore the many treasures that the Press has to offer, including our renowned Classics of Western Spirituality series, the Paulist Biblical Commentary, the numerous titles that address the importance of science and faith, or remind us of the struggle of so many on the margins of society due to their race, sex, sexuality, exploitation, or the effects of climate change, as well as those that bring hope to our spirituality. On behalf of the Paulist Fathers, welcome to the community of Paulist Press! Paul McMahon |
